Writing & Literacy Support

Writing tutoring is available to all students wishing to improve their writing skills and writing resources may be obtained for free from the Academic Support Centre on all three campuses. Support is typically offered as one-on-one, structured tutor-tutee sessions, and students are expected to bring their assignments with them so tutors can see students' current writing ability and offer student-specific writing assistance. Consult the campus specific information below for information regarding the current availability of our services. While seeking assistance on any campus, take note of the following rules and guidelines to ensure the appointment is valuable and rewarding for all participants.

Help topics include:

  • Clarity and flow
  • Essay and paragraph structure
  • Grammar
  • Referencing and citing
  • Spelling and punctuation

Our writing tutors have experience assisting students with a number of assignment types from a variety of programs. Writing tutors assist only with writing specific issues (not content-related questions), but they are able to provide writing support for diverse projects.

Students may seek assistance with assignments such as:

  • Business reports
  • Cover letters and résumés
  • Research essays
  • Technical reports

Preparing for an Appointment

  1. Tutors do not provide an editing/proofreading service. Tutors work with students on their assignments to help identify issues and encourage students to develop their writing skills.
  2. This service is available for students currently enrolled in a course at St. Lawrence College and offers assistance with written assignments. Academic Support Centre tutors cannot offer assistance with non-written assignments (e.g., improving English oral skills), comment on course content/evaluation, or teach lessons regarding English writing.
  3. Students must bring a hard copy of their written work to their in-person appointments.
  4. In response to the public health crisis caused by the spread of Covid-19, all appointments will occur online until further notice. Students should follow the directions provided at the time they book their written feedback or live Teams appointment, which may require that they provide a copy of their work to the tutor before the appointment time.

Book an Appointment - Writing Support

Students wanting to see a writing tutor in Brockville, Cornwall, or Kingston must book an appointment through the booking site. Until SLC returns to normal operations, all appointments will take place online. Students will be asked to select, at the time of booking, whether they would like to receive a document of written feedback related to their work or to participate in a live Microsoft Teams appointment with a tutor.

Guidelines

Appointments are 50 minutes in length, and students are permitted to book up to one hour per day and up to three hours per week of tutoring time. The Centre reserves the right to adjust these allowances in response to service use and the current level of demand, ensuring that the greatest number of students have the opportunity to access support.

This service is generally available from 8:30 am until 5:00 pm from Monday to Friday, though this schedule may be adjusted throughout the semester. Check the schedule provided on the bookings site to confirm current availability. Students should note that time slots often book quickly; it is wise to book in advance to avoid disappointment. Additional hours (such as those dedicated to SNAP events) are posted when available.
